Update to the COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection

The COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection has been updated with input from clinicians.

The All admissions section of the data collection form will collect the following data items for all PICU admissions meeting the criteria for inclusion in the COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection:

  • Number of doses of COVID-19 vaccine received
  • Date of most recent COVID-19 vaccine
  • Type of most recent COVID-19 vaccine

These fields were previously only collected in the Potential COVID 19 vaccine related complications section/ cohort and have now been removed to avoid duplication.

Other updates:

  • PIMS-TS section: We’ve amended “COVID-19 PCR test result” question title to “COVID-19 PCR test result during this admission”.
  • COVID-19 confirmed by PCR section: We’ve amended the option title “No symptoms – asymptomatic throughout PICU stay” to “No symptoms attributed to COVID-19 throughout PICU stay / asymptomatic”.

In order to release this there will be some PICANet web downtime from 17:00 on Friday 11th February 2022. If you use PICANet web, a notification will appear on PICANet web to not enter data when the system is at risk. The updated data collection will be available from Saturday 12th February 2022.

Version 2.0 of the data collection form and dataset definitions manual to support completion of the data will be made available on the COVID-19 page.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch with the team via picanet@leeds.ac.uk and PICANet Research Nurse Lyn Palmer (slp60@leicester.ac.uk).

Removal of field from PICANet Admissions dataset

Please note that there is no requirement to complete the GP practice code field in the PICANet Admissions dataset from Tuesday 01 Feb 2022.

By 31 Mar 2022 this field will be removed from the PICANet Admission dataset so it will not appear for those who enter data manually and if data imports include this field, the data will not be stored in PICANet web.

We will update the news page to confirm the date that the field is to be removed and let you know when the updated data collection resources are available.

Further to ceasing collection, previously collected GP practice code field data will be removed from PICANet web as it is not necessary or utilised.

COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection

Coming soon:

PICANet will be updating the current COVID-19 Custom Data Collection to COVID-19 II. The Custom Data Collection has been revised with input from clinicians, taking into account feedback from the original COVID-19 data collection, and is more streamlined for quicker data collection/entry. It also has the addition of the variable: ‘Potential COVID-19 vaccine related complications’ as a reason for reporting.  To aid data collection of the new revised COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection, a revised dataset definitions manual, and FAQ page, will all be available to download shortly.

It is anticipated that this will be launched on Monday 6th December 2021 unless otherwise stated.

PCCS Standards 2021 and PICANet

On the 15th October 2021, the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS) released their 6th Edition of the PCCS Quality Standards for the Care of Critically Ill or Injured Children. Two of these standards relate to the timely submission of admission, referral, and transport data to PICANet. The new PCCS standards 2021, have reduced this submission time of data to PICANet from three months to two months:

L3-702- Data for submission to PICANet should be collected and submitted as soon as possible and no later than two months after discharge from the PCC unit.

T-701 – data for referral and transport should be collected and submitted as soon as possible and no later than two months after the transfer.

PICANet will implement this change using a staged approach. At first, email validations between now and the 31st December will show both the two and three month data validation queries for your information. From the 1st January 2022 PICANet will then only show the two month validation queries, and we will be expecting you to meet these standards.

We will of course work closely with units if there are any problems or issues that arise. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch with the team via picanet@leeds.ac.uk.
