New COVID-19 Customised Data Collection

In order to further support understanding of the disease and better describe its presentation and treatment provided within paediatric intensive care units, PICANet have been working with members of the Clinical Advisory Group and PICS to develop a COVID-19 customised data collection.

This customised data collection is now available on PICANet Web and we would ask you to complete this for the following patients that have been admitted to your unit since 01/01/2020:

  1. Children aged less than 18 years for whom a diagnosis of COVID-19 is confirmed by laboratory diagnosis during or immediately prior to admission to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and
  2. Children who remain COVID-19 suspected or probable after repeated COVID-19 negative laboratory test results and in the presence of no other positive virology and bacteriology results.

This will include children admitted with multi-system inflammatory syndrome exclusive of other anti-microbial cause; provisionally called paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS).

The data collection form for completion and a data definitions manual to support completion of the data are available to download from the PICANet website on the COVID-19 page (https://www.picanet.org.uk/covid-19/).

In order to support timely analysis and outputs we would be very grateful if you could please complete this data as soon as possible after discharge.

If you have any queries please contact Caroline Lamming PICANet Research Nurse crl4@leicester.ac.uk or picanet@leeds.ac.uk and thank you again for all your efforts supporting this important work.

Future Clinical Coding on PICANet Web

The PICANet team is working towards the introduction of the SNOMED CT coding system on PICANet Web. This development is directed by the NHS Paper ‘Personalised Health and Care 2020: A Framework for Action’ which endorses a move to adopt a single clinical terminology- SNOMED CT by April 2020.
The Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health speciality groups are in the process of developing a subset of SNOMED-CT concepts relevant to their special interest. A PIC subgroup had been established with membership including clinicians from PICS UK and members of the PICANet team. A dataset including SNOMED codes specific to PIC and cardiac specialities will be developed and uploaded to the PICANet Web clinical coder.

Initially availability of READ codes will be maintained on PICANet Web to allow units to submit data using either coding system.

Information for Patients and Families

The information collected and published by PICANet can help parents, carers and others gain an insight and understanding about the activity of the paediatric intensive care service within the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

PICANet brings together health professionals, parents and carers with experience of paediatric intensive care, to work together to improve services for the family.

These pages provide links to information and organisations that may provide additional support and information for families caring for a sick child at the time of or following an admission to paediatric intensive care.

Does my child have to be included?

If you do not want information which could identify your child included in PICANet, please tell the nurse or doctor caring for your child. They will make sure your child’s confidential information is not sent to PICANet. Your decision will not alter the care your child receives in this or any other hospital.

If you have left hospital and decide that you do not want information which could identify your child included in PICANet and would like to withdraw any information, please call us directly at PICANet on 0113 3438125 or email picanet@leeds.ac.uk.
