The PICANet dataset for the period 01.01.2021 to 31.12.2023 will be frozen at 12 midnight on 01st March 2024; therefore, it is essential that by the close of Thursday 29th February, all event data for this period is completed and all validation queries resolved. 

For children admitted prior to 31st December 2023 who remain as inpatients on your PICU please ensure that all daily intervention data up to and including 31st December 2023 is complete. 

The data freeze has been brought forward this year as planned, in line with the reduction in the submission time of data to PICANet from three months to two months (PCCS standards 2021). 

Thank you all for your efforts to work to enter and validate the data. We look forward to publishing the level 3 National Paediatric Critical Care Audit State of the Nation Report 2024 later this year.  

PICANet, based at the Universities of Leeds and Leicester, will be closed during the academic Christmas holiday.

Support from the PICANet team will be available up until Thursday 21^st December 2023.

If any queries, including technical support queries, are received after 21^st December, we will respond to them when our offices re-open on 2^nd January 2024.

We are pleased to announce that the PICANet State of the Nation Report 2023 has been published. It is available our Reports page.

The report comprises the Summary Report, Infographic, Appendices and the Tables and Figures.

The Infographic highlights some of the report’s key findings.

We have also added new resources to support the collection of healthcare associated infection and delirium screening result data to the Quality Improvement Resources page.

The PICANet State of the Nation Report 2023, covering the January 2020 – December 2022 data collection period, is due to be published on the reports page of our website on 14^th December 2023. We are pleased to announce that the PICANet Data Dashboard has been updated. Take a look for the first insights into PICU activity and performance against PICANet’s clinically agreed key metrics in 2022 ahead of the release of the forthcoming State of the Nation Report 2023.

Next week we will refresh and update the PICANet Data Dashboard. The January – December 2022 data will be added and we are pleased to include data from all participating organisations in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The update includes the new addition of numbers and rates of unplanned extubations in all PICUs.

We are pleased to announce that PICANet are launching the Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) data collection. This comprises of both an ECMO Referral and ECMO Admission dataset.

Initially, data will be collected using paper data collection forms. This is to allow for a review of the dataset and data collection tool while the software to support the collection in PICANet Web is developed.  This also allows for you to develop an understanding of completing the data collection forms and how this will work practically on your unit. Only those units who undertake ECMO will be required to complete these forms, and forms will need to be completed retrospectively for the current financial year (from 01/04/2023).

Picanet is celebrating 20 years of data collection in 2023!

As part of this, we would like to showcase the best ways our data has, and is being used.

We would like to know:

• Whether you have used PICANet data in the past 20 years
• If so, what for? (topics you have looked into etc)
• Where you have had any publications, conference abstracts or presentations which include the use of PICANet data.
