PICANet Level 2 Expansion Update

We are pleased to announce that the Level 2 admission dataset is now incorporated into PICANet Web database and online for data entry by those organisations who are participating in the first stages of the roll out across England. We look forward to continuing the roll out.

Please note: This only applies to the submission of data from the new participating Level 2 centres, any Level 2 data already submitted to PICANet Web as part of normal PICU/PCCU submission is unaffected

A temporary pause on processing new data requests

We regret that at this time PICANet are taking a temporary pause on processing new requests for data while we focus on completing the key deliverables for the national clinical audit. This is a short term measure which we will continue to review. We will resume as soon as practicably possible.

If you have submitted an enquiry or request before 10th February 2023, we will continue to process this/ respond to you as soon as we can.

In the meantime, you might find the PICANet Reports and their associated tables and figures helpful. They are available on our Reports and Annual Report Archive webpages. We also have a number of reports in relation to COVID-19 available on the COVID-19 webpage.

Thank you for your understanding.

PICANet Annual Dataset Freeze 2023

The PICANet dataset for the period 01.01.2020 to 31.12.2022 will be frozen at 12 midnight on 31st March 2023; it is essential that all event data for this period is completed and all validation queries resolved.

For children admitted prior to 31st December 2022 who remain as inpatients on your unit please ensure that all daily intervention data up to and including 31st December 2022 is complete.

Although there has been a reduction in the submission time of data to PICANet from three months to two months (PCCS standards 2021), we have not brought forward the data freeze this year due to the current climate. However, next year we plan to freeze on 01st March 2024 to be in line with the new standards.

Thank you all for your efforts to work to 31st March to enter and validate the data.

Seasonal Closure 23/12/2022 – 02/01/2023

PICANet, based at the Universities of Leeds and Leicester, will be closed during the academic Christmas holiday.

Support from the PICANet team will be available up until 22nd December 2022.

If any queries, including technical support queries, are received after 22nd December, we will respond to them when our offices re-open on the 3rd and 4th of January 2023.

Thank you and season’s greetings from the PICANet Team.

PICANet Web Database Scheduled Downtime 10:00-17:00 on Tuesday 1st November

PICANet need to take the database offline on Tuesday 1st November from 10:00-17:00 to allow us to complete key tasks for this year’s annual report.

Please save your work and exit the application before this time, any unsaved work will be lost. We hope to complete this work before 17:00 but please consider the system at risk until the news item in the PICANet web database has been removed.

Thank you for your patience.

New RSPRT Guidance for Units released

We have put together guidance for units on resetting sequential probability ratio test (RSPRT) plots as an addition to PICANet’s main Outlier Policy. It is available on our Policies page.

RSPRT plots identify where PICUs have performance outside of what might be expected given the case-mix of admissions. Units are able to view their RSPRT plot at any point via the PICANet Web database to identify and respond to potential issues in a timely fashion. PICANet also contact each unit quarterly to inform them of their current RSPRT status which will be one of the following:

  • satisfactory performance
  • cause for close monitoring
  • cause for concern requiring internal review (positive/negative)

This RSPRT Guidance for Units is a quality improvement guide, providing units with:

  • a background description to the RSPRT plots
  • interpretation of the plots and their three possible states
  • the outline of a process to follow in case of an alarm or reset (cause for concern)
  • a case study from a unit that has dealt with an RSPRT outlier

We hope that you find this guidance useful. If have any questions, please contact picanet@leeds.ac.uk.

Update to the COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection

The COVID-19 II Custom Data Collection has been updated with input from clinicians. Effective from today, the data collection can be completed for all PICU admissions with COVID-19 confirmed by lateral flow device (LFD) as well as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

Version 2.1 of the data collection form and dataset definitions manual to support collection of the data are available on the COVID-19 webpage.
